For independent businesses with 1–15 employees

The HR professional
who picks up when you call.

A named HR professional in your corner: contracts, compliance, and people decisions where an AI giving a confident answer isn't quite the same as a qualified one. For independent businesses too small for an in-house team, and too exposed to keep hoping for the best.

👋 Hey Buddy
Why the name
Out of your depth?
Good. That's where I work.

In scuba diving, you never go alone. Your buddy is the trained professional who stays close, watches for problems, and gets you safely back to the surface. HR Buddy works the same way, except the ocean is UK employment law, and the problems usually start with an AI giving a very convincing answer that may or may not hold up in an employment tribunal.

Not a helpline. Not a chatbot. A buddy.

You know you need HR. You just haven't had time to sort it.

Most founders of independent creative, digital, and knowledge-based businesses are going with the flow on people decisions, hoping nothing bad will happen, or asking an AI that sounds confident but isn't accountable. Sound familiar?

📋

You rely on freelancers and fixed-term contracts to flex around work, but you've no idea if your arrangements are legally watertight. One IR35 enquiry or misclassification claim could be devastating.

⚖️

Revenue dipped and you had to let someone go. You followed a process you found online, hoped it was right, and moved on quickly. You're still not entirely sure you did it correctly, and with the 2026 law changes, that uncertainty is getting more expensive.

🔍

You want someone senior enough to hit the ground running but your budget says otherwise. You're asking the market for five years' experience at a startup salary, and wondering why no one's applying.

⏱️

You've got no retention strategy, no real onboarding, and performance conversations that only happen when something goes wrong. You're one resignation away from a very bad quarter.

From reactive firefighting to quiet confidence.

Where you are now

  • Freelancers and fixed-term staff with no proper contracts
  • No process when revenue drops and you need to restructure
  • Job ads that attract the wrong people or no one at all
  • No onboarding: new hires figure it out themselves
  • IR35 and contractor status you've never had properly reviewed
  • Paying a solicitor £300/hr every time something goes wrong

With HR Buddy

  • Compliant contracts for permanent, fixed-term, and freelance staff
  • A clear process before you need to act, not panic after
  • Practical hiring guidance that matches your budget to reality
  • An onboarding checklist that keeps new starters past month three
  • IR35 sense-checks and contractor arrangement reviews
  • Predictable monthly cost instead of surprise legal bills

Everything a small independent business needs. Nothing you don't.

Real expertise: not a chatbot, not a call centre, not a 200-page handbook you'll never read. A named HR professional who knows your business.

💬

Quarterly strategy call

30 minutes every quarter to review what's ahead: hires, renewals, team changes, before they become emergencies.

📰

Employment law briefings

Plain-English summaries of what's changing, what it means for your business, and what you need to do. No jargon, no panic.

🚀

Onboarding checklist

Contracts, right-to-work, equipment, first-week structure, probation setup. Built for small teams doing this for the first time.

🛡️

IR35 sense-check

Using contractors? We'll review your setup and flag any misclassification risks before HMRC does.

Real situations. Real answers. Same day.

1

"Revenue's dropped and I need to restructure the team. What's the legal process?"

We walk you through your options (fixed-term contract endings, redundancy, restructuring) so you act quickly without creating tribunal risk. Full case management available as a project add-on.

2

"We've got three freelancers basically working full-time. Are we exposed on IR35?"

We review each arrangement against the IR35 indicators and advise clearly whether you need to restructure or formalise any relationships before HMRC asks.

3

"I need to hire someone but I'm not sure my budget is realistic. Can you help me scope it?"

We give you a straight answer on market rates, help scope the role realistically, and advise on structuring the offer to attract the right person within your budget.

4

"A key person just handed in their notice. I can't afford to lose them. What do I do?"

We help with the immediate response: counteroffer options, handover. Then we fix the underlying issue so you're not in this position again in six months.

5

"We're bringing someone on a 6-month fixed-term contract for a project. What do I need?"

We provide a compliant fixed-term contract template, explain the rights that come with it including the 2026 changes, and make sure you're covered on renewal, non-renewal, and redundancy entitlements.

HR Buddy is built around the way independent businesses operate.

You've probably got permanent staff, a few fixed-term project hires, and some freelancers who are somewhere in between. A large consultancy retainer isn't the right fit, and off-the-shelf documents don't reflect how your business works. HR Buddy is designed for exactly this kind of team.

Permanent staff

Contracts, probation frameworks, performance, onboarding: the foundations that keep your core team protected and productive.

Fixed-term contracts

Project-based hires need proper contracts with clear terms on renewal, non-renewal, and redundancy rights. Most small businesses get this wrong.

Freelancers & contractors

IR35, contractor agreements, and the boundary between self-employment and employment. If your freelancers work like employees, you're carrying risk.

UK employment law is changing fast. Small businesses are most exposed.

The Employment Rights Act 2025 introduces the biggest changes in a generation. If your contracts and processes aren't updated, you're carrying risk you can't see yet.

APR 2026

SSP from day one. Paternity and parental leave: day-one rights.

Employees no longer need qualifying service. Your contracts and absence policies need updating now. This is already in force.

OCT 2026

Fire-and-rehire banned. Sexual harassment duty strengthened.

"All reasonable steps" standard for preventing harassment. Tribunal time limits extended from 3 to 6 months. Policies and training need to be in place.

JAN 2027

Unfair dismissal qualifying period drops from 2 years to 6 months.

This is the big one. Every hire becomes a potential tribunal risk after just six months. Your probation framework and documentation need to be watertight before this date.

Two ways in. No long contracts.

The retainer is for founders who want consistent support before things go wrong. On Demand is for when something's already on fire and you need a straight answer today.

What If HR exists because most small businesses get one of two things: expensive corporate HR that treats them like a case number, or cheap advice lines where nobody knows their name. HR Buddy is neither. Proper expertise. Plain English. One person who knows your situation.

Based in Surrey. Works remotely with founder-led businesses across the UK.

Things founders ask before signing up.

What's the difference between HR Buddy and HR Buddy On Demand?
HR Buddy is a monthly retainer: you pay £245/month and get a named HR professional available throughout the month, covering advisory, templates, quarterly calls, law updates, and proactive support. HR Buddy On Demand has no monthly commitment: you pay £125 to access the service, then £125/hour for exactly what you need. On Demand is best for urgent situations or one-off queries; the retainer is for founders who want steady, ongoing support before things go wrong.
What if I need more than 2 hours in a month?
Most clients use well under the 2-hour allowance. If you have an unusually busy month, we'll let you know and can offer additional time at the On Demand rate (£125/hour). If you're consistently hitting the limit, it usually means you're ready for a more comprehensive retained programme, and we'll have that conversation openly.
Is this just an advice line?
No. Large HR providers give you a rotating cast of advisors reading from a script. HR Buddy gives you Elena, or a named senior associate, who knows your business, your team, and your situation. You get continuity and judgment, not a call centre.
Can you handle a disciplinary or grievance?
HR Buddy covers advisory: we guide you through the process, review your letters, and tell you exactly what to do at each step. If you need someone to attend formal meetings or manage a complex case end-to-end, that's available from £1,000 as a project add-on.
What's the commitment period?
3 months minimum, then rolling monthly. We keep the barrier low because we're confident you'll stay. Once you have proper HR support, going back to winging it isn't appealing. If it's not working, 30 days' notice either way.
Do I need this if I only have 2 or 3 employees?
Especially then. The January 2027 change (unfair dismissal qualifying period dropping from 2 years to 6 months) means even your earliest hires carry real tribunal risk after six months. Getting your contracts and processes right now is far cheaper than fixing a claim later.
How is this different from Peninsula or Croner?
Three ways: you speak to the same person every time, there's no 5-year contract, and the advice is specific to how your business works, not generic scripts for any industry. We understand creative and knowledge-based businesses: project-based work, flexible teams, and contractor-heavy models.

AI gives confident answers. Employment tribunals don't care how confident they were.

Book a free 20-minute discovery call. We'll talk through where your business is, what risks you're carrying, and whether HR Buddy is the right fit: retainer or On Demand.

No commitment. No sales pitch. Just a straight conversation.
