The HR professional
who picks up when you call.

HR Buddy: named HR support for growing businesses
👋 Hey Buddy
Why HR Buddy
Not corporate HR.
Proper HR.

Most small businesses looking for HR support end up with something that doesn't quite fit. Either a corporate retainer or a fractional HR director, someone positioned as a strategic partner when what you actually need is someone to handle the contract question, the performance issue, the resignation that came out of nowhere. Or a call centre style advice line: fast, anonymous, shooting templates at you and moving on to the next case. HR Buddy is neither. It is a named HR professional who knows your business, understands your team, and is there when things come up.

Not a stranger with a script. A buddy.

You know you need HR. You just haven't had time to sort it.

Most business owners with a small team are going with the flow on people decisions, hoping nothing bad will happen, or asking an AI that sounds confident but isn't accountable. Sound familiar?

📋

Your employment contracts are out of date, inconsistent across the team, or were never quite right to begin with. You know it is a risk, but fixing it has always felt like a job for another week.

⚖️

A member of staff left, something escalated, or you had to act quickly on a people issue. You did your best. But if anyone asked you to show exactly what process you followed, you would struggle to explain it.

🔍

You need to bring someone new on and you're not certain what you actually need in place. A proper contract, an offer letter, right-to-work checks? You know there's more to it than you think.

⏱️

There's no real onboarding, no performance framework, no documented process for anything. Everything runs on trust and goodwill. Which works, until it doesn't. And when it doesn't, you're on your own.

From reactive firefighting to quiet confidence.

Where you are now

  • Contracts that are years out of date or different for every person
  • No documented process when a people issue lands in your lap
  • Hiring with no clear picture of what the role actually needs or costs
  • New starters who figure it out for themselves
  • Performance and absence managed on instinct, not process
  • Paying a solicitor £300/hr every time something goes wrong

With HR Buddy

  • Compliant, up-to-date contracts across your whole team
  • A clear process before you need it, not panic after
  • Practical hiring guidance that matches your budget to reality
  • An onboarding checklist that keeps new starters past month three
  • Performance and absence frameworks you can actually point to
  • Predictable monthly cost instead of surprise legal bills

Everything a small business needs from HR. Nothing you don't.

Real expertise: not a chatbot, not a call centre, not a 200-page handbook you'll never read. A named HR professional who knows your business.

💬

Email and WhatsApp advisory

Ask your question, get a clear answer, usually within a few hours and always within one working day. Monday to Friday, 9–5.

Up to 2 hours advisory time/month

Calls, email advice, document reviews, written guidance. Tracked in fair increments; most clients use 45–90 minutes.

📄

Employment documents, drafted for you

When you need a contract, a probation letter, a policy, or a leaver document, I draft or adapt it for your specific situation. UK-compliant, written in plain English, not lifted from a generic library.

🔒

Compliance signposting

We flag risks early so you act before they become grievances, claims, or HMRC enquiries.

📞

Quarterly strategy call

30 minutes every quarter to review what's ahead: hires, renewals, team changes, before they become emergencies.

📰

Employment law briefings

Plain-English summaries of what's changing, what it means for your business, and what you need to do. No jargon, no panic.

🚀

Onboarding checklist

Contracts, right-to-work, equipment, first-week structure, probation setup. Built for small teams doing this for the first time.

🛡️

Probation framework and documentation

Setting up probation properly from day one: review schedule, documentation, and clear criteria. Especially important now that the unfair dismissal qualifying period drops to six months in January 2027.

Real situations. Real answers. Same day.

1

"My employment contracts are all different and some haven't been updated in years. Where do I start?"

We audit what you have, identify the gaps and risks, and draft contracts that are consistent and compliant across your team. Plain English, built for your specific situation, not lifted from a generic template library.

2

"A member of staff has raised a formal complaint and I don't know what to do next."

We guide you through the process step by step: what to acknowledge, how to respond, what to document, and what to avoid. Advisory support is included in the retainer; full case management is available as a project add-on.

3

"I'm making my first hire. What do I actually need to do this properly?"

We set you up with the right contract, right-to-work checks, offer letter, and onboarding checklist. We scope the role honestly and help you structure the offer to attract the right person within your budget.

4

"We've grown to around 30 people and HR is still all ad hoc. We need a proper setup."

We work through what you have and what you need: consistent contracts, documented policies, a performance framework, and a clear process for the people issues that come up regularly. No corporate complexity, just the right foundations.

5

"A key person has just handed in their notice. I can't afford to lose them right now."

We help you think through your options on the immediate response, from counteroffers to handover planning. Then we look at the underlying issue so you're not in this position again in six months.

HR Buddy is built around the way small service businesses actually operate.

Also built for bigger teams

Already have someone doing HR? They might need a buddy too.

HR Buddy is not only for business owners managing HR themselves. If you have an office manager, EA, or internal HR coordinator handling people matters and they need a qualified senior HR professional to sense-check a tricky situation, review a contract, or advise on a specific case, this is exactly what HR Buddy is for. Expert backup when it is needed, without the cost of a full consultancy retainer.

This works well for:

  • Office managers handling HR on top of everything else
  • Junior HR professionals who need a senior sounding board
  • HR coordinators without a line manager in HR
  • Growing businesses bridging the gap before a full HR hire
  • Anyone dealing with a specific people issue outside their usual expertise

You've probably got a small permanent team, occasional project hires, and people processes that were never quite set up properly. A large consultancy retainer isn't the right fit, and off-the-shelf template documents don't reflect how your business works. HR Buddy is designed for exactly this kind of team. And if you're a growing business with an office manager, an HR coordinator, or even a part-time HR hire doing their best, HR Buddy works as a senior sounding board for them, not a replacement.

Permanent staff

Contracts, probation frameworks, performance, onboarding: the foundations that keep your core team protected and productive.

Fixed-term contracts

Project-based hires need proper contracts with clear terms on renewal, non-renewal, and redundancy rights. Most small businesses get this wrong.

People processes

Onboarding, performance, absence, and documentation. The practical foundations that protect your business and give your team a clear, consistent experience from day one.

UK employment law is changing fast. Small businesses are most exposed.

The Employment Rights Act 2025 introduces the biggest changes in a generation. If your contracts and processes aren't updated, you're carrying risk you can't see yet.

APR 2026

SSP from day one. Paternity and parental leave: day-one rights.

Employees no longer need qualifying service. Your contracts and absence policies need updating now. This is already in force.

OCT 2026

Fire-and-rehire banned. Sexual harassment duty strengthened.

"All reasonable steps" standard for preventing harassment. Tribunal time limits extended from 3 to 6 months. Policies and training need to be in place.

JAN 2027

Unfair dismissal qualifying period drops from 2 years to 6 months.

This is the big one. Every hire becomes a potential tribunal risk after just six months. Your probation framework and documentation need to be watertight before this date.

Two ways in. No long contracts.

The retainer is for business owners who want consistent support before things go wrong. On Demand is for when something's already on fire and you need a straight answer today.

What If HR exists because most small businesses get one of two things: expensive corporate HR that treats them like a case number, or cheap advice lines where nobody knows their name. HR Buddy is neither. Proper expertise. Plain English. One person who knows your situation.

Based in Surrey. Works remotely with owner-managed businesses across the UK.

Things business owners ask before signing up.

What's the difference between HR Buddy and HR Buddy On Demand?
HR Buddy is a monthly retainer: you pay £245/month and get a named HR professional available throughout the month, covering advisory, templates, quarterly calls, law updates, and proactive support. HR Buddy On Demand has no monthly commitment: you pay £125 to access the service, then £125/hour for exactly what you need. On Demand is best for urgent situations or one-off queries; the retainer is for business owners who want steady, ongoing support before things go wrong.
What if I need more than 2 hours in a month?
Most clients use well under the 2-hour allowance. If you have an unusually busy month, we'll let you know and can offer additional time at the On Demand rate (£150/hour). If you're consistently hitting the limit, it usually means you're ready for a more comprehensive retained programme, and we'll have that conversation openly.
Is this just an advice line?
No. Large HR providers give you a rotating cast of advisors reading from a script. HR Buddy gives you Elena, or a named senior associate, who knows your business, your team, and your situation. You get continuity and judgment, not a call centre.
Can you handle a disciplinary or grievance?
HR Buddy covers advisory: we guide you through the process, review your letters, and tell you exactly what to do at each step. If you need someone to attend formal meetings or manage a complex case end-to-end, that's available from £1,000 as a project add-on.
What's the commitment period?
3 months minimum, then rolling monthly. We keep the barrier low because we're confident you'll stay. Once you have proper HR support, going back to winging it isn't appealing. If it's not working, 30 days' notice either way.
Do I need this if I only have 2 or 3 employees?
Especially then. The January 2027 change (unfair dismissal qualifying period dropping from 2 years to 6 months) means even your earliest hires carry real tribunal risk after six months. Getting your contracts and processes right now is far cheaper than fixing a claim later.
How is this different from Peninsula or Croner?
Three ways: you speak to the same person every time, there's no 5-year contract, and the advice is specific to how your business works, not generic scripts for any industry. We understand small service businesses: small permanent teams, occasional hires, and the kind of people issues that need a practical answer, not a script.
We already have someone doing HR internally. Is this still relevant?
Yes, and often this is where HR Buddy is most valuable. If you have an office manager, EA, or junior HR person handling people matters, they're likely doing their best on things that genuinely need senior expertise: a tricky dismissal, a grievance, or a specific contract or compliance question. HR Buddy gives them (and you) a qualified professional to call on for exactly those situations, without the cost of a full consultancy retainer. Senior-level support, used only when you need it.

AI gives confident answers. Employment tribunals don't care how confident they were.

Book a free 20-minute discovery call. We'll talk through where your business is, what risks you're carrying, and whether HR Buddy is the right fit: retainer or On Demand.

No commitment. No sales pitch. Just a straight conversation.
